We’ve come to the time of year when all of us have much more of an opportunity to use our club facilities and operate our vessels in our magnificent lake with that great Hill Country weather.

It looks like our first quarter is off to a great start.  The increased number of events we have offered our members and the level of participation in club activities is extremely encouraging.

The month of May features more youth activities, the Float-A-Soldier outing, our Jamaican-Me-Crazy Couples Race & Party, a dock box sale and the Blessing of the Fleet.  Don‘t forget to enhance your wardrobe with one of our HCYC fashion wear items.

The theme of this month’s Ship’s Log is safety.  This issue is dedicated to safe operation of your vessel, and being sure your passengers are safety aware.  Most of my comments on safety were mentioned in last month’s article after the unfortunate boating accident I witnessed.

Does everyone have enough flotation devices?  Do you know how to put on a PFD and who must wear them?  Where is your fire extinguisher?  Is it operable?  Do you have a signaling device that works?  Where are you permitted to have an open flame at the marina?  Are you up to date with the TP&W and have a properly insured vessel?  All the things and more you should be asking yourself about preventing a calamity.

If you are like me, I have nearly all of the safety features covered but I need to replace my batteries before I get stuck out on the lake again.

Please join us for some more great times on the lake,

Fair winds,
John Larkin
